Can Cannabis Help With Weight Loss?

People have been consuming cannabis for hundreds of years. In recent years, it has gained significant recognition for its ability to safely and effectively treat a variety of conditions. One way people are starting to use cannabis is to aid with their weight loss journey. Because, contrary to popular belief about cannabis and the “munchies”, people can also use the drug to help them lose weight.

Marijuana and Obesity Rates

In 2011, the American Journal of Epidemiology studied the relationship between cannabis use and obesity. What they found was that, out of 50,000 respondents, obesity rates dropped to 14.3 percent from 17.2 percent among those who reported using cannabis at least three times per week. They also concluded that despite the evidence that cannabis use stimulates appetite in clinical trials and laboratory studies, cannabis users are actually less likely to be obese than nonusers in the general population.

Why Is That The Case?

Experts have a few theories for why cannabis is linked to a lowered chance of obesity and reduced BMI.

It Can Increase Mobility

When used properly, cannabis can relieve symptoms of pain and stiffness.

It Can Help You Drink Less

Scientists and some cannabis users report drinking less alcohol than people who don’t consume cannabis.

It Can Lower Stress

Studies show that people are more likely to rely on comfort food when they are stressed. So, cannabis can help with weight loss by easing anxiety and preventing users from turning to their favorite comfort food when they’re stressed.

It May Improve Sleep

A poor sleep schedule can contribute to weight gain. Cannabis can help with insomnia and keep users asleep all night long.

It Can Boost Metabolism

Some studies have found that high amounts of cannabis can increase your metabolism and lead to a lower BMI.

What About the Munchies?

Cannabis has gained a reputation for causing “the munchies,” and people are often shocked to hear that cannabis may help with weight loss. Researchers are still trying to figure out exactly why that is. But as of right now, they believe that a balancing act between the THC and CBD is the cause for this unexpected combination.
