Marijuana usage, both medical and recreational, has been increasing in popularity for years now. More and more Marylanders are using marijuana to treat a variety of ailments and the symptoms that accompany them. We wanted to take some time to outline all of the information you’re going to need if you’re looking to obtain a medical marijuana card in Maryland.
Do You Have a Qualifying Condition?
Medical marijuana is legal in the state of Maryland, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t restrictions and limitations placed on it. To qualify for a medical card, you’ll need to be suffering from one of the following conditions:
- Chronic pain
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Seizures
- Severe or persistent muscle spasms
- Cachexia
- Anorexia
- Glaucoma
- Wasting Syndrome
- Severe pain
- Severe nausea
- Any condition that is severe and can’t be treated by other medical treatments, and can be “reasonable expected to be relieved” by using cannabis.
Register as a Patient with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC)
If you have a qualifying condition, then your first step in acquiring a medical marijuana card is to register with the MMCC. If you’re over the age of eighteen, you just need to fill out the online registration form. If under the age of eighteen, a caregiver will need to be assigned to the account at all times. Caregivers are parents or legal guardians who are over the age of twenty one. In order for the minor to receive a medical marijuana certification, the caregiver will need to provide proof of relationship to patient, a notarized minor patient form and a caregiver ID card.
Obtain a Written Certification from a Provider
After you’ve registered with the MMCC, your next step will be to receive a written certification from a provider who is registered with them. Keep in mind that this certification will expire after 120 days if not used.
With a Written Certification, You’re Ready to Go to a Dispensary
Once you’ve received a written certification from a certified provider, you’re ready to go to a dispensary. You’ll have a number of different cannabis options available to you at the dispensary, and the worker there should be able to explain things to you. Additionally, you can also talk to your doctor or medical cannabis card provider about what method of use is right for you.
