Upending the Stigma of Medical Marijuana

The usage of marijuana, be it medical or recreational, has long been stigmatized in American culture, and by American policy. The United States of course isn’t the only country to take this route with marijuana, but things have been changing in the United States in recent decades. Marijuana usage has been on the rise for years, and more and more states legalize the drug every election cycle. At Cannaleaf Health, we’ve been helping Marylanders alleviate their ailments with medical marijuana for a while now, and wanted to talk about how the usage of medical marijuana has been stigmatized, and how that stigmatization can be upended.

It is Medicine, Just Like Any Other

Anyone who would criticize someone for taking their medicine is being rude and inconsiderate. Unfortunately, that’s not how everyone sees it. There are still people out there who see marijuana as nothing more than an illicit drug, and they believe it has no medical usage. Were they to consider it a valid medicine, they likely wouldn’t hold the beliefs they do. The more generally accepted marijuana becomes as medicine, through more research/studies and state legalization, the less legitimate the claims of these people become. Marijuana is medicine, just like any other kind, and more and more people are realizing that.

You Don’t Have to Be a “Stoner” Just Because You Smoke Weed

The term “stoner” can be insulting to some, and complimentary to others. The term is essentially a stereotype which implies that people who smoke weed are lazy and slow. Some would never want to be called a stoner for this reason, but others have embraced the term with open arms. These people openly wear shirts with marijuana leaves and other marijuana themed sayings and images. No matter what anyone thinks of you, know that you have the option of whether or not you choose to embrace “stoner culture”. Just because you use medical marijuana, doesn’t mean you’re a stoner.

People from All Demographics Smoke Weed

Sometimes people like to link marijuana usage to certain demographics, and while usage may not be even across every metric, as someone who has helped a lot of people, believe us when we tell you there isn’t a demographic group that isn’t utilizing medical marijuana. People of all ages, genders, and races are using cannabis to help alleviate their pain.
