What is a Tincture and How Do I Use It?

Marijuana has been used for a long time to help treat a variety of illnesses and ailments. One of the older methods of consuming cannabis is through the use of tinctures. At CannaLeaf Health, we’ve helped a lot of Marylanders begin using cannabis, and wanted to take some time today to talk about tinctures.

What Exactly is a Tincture?

Tinctures are herbal extracts made by soaking herbs in alcohol, vegetable glycerin, or oil. They’re easy to make, have a long shelf life, and you don’t have to smoke them. Similar to edibles, tinctures are ingested orally, but they aren’t swallowed. Instead of swallowing, tinctures are instead absorbed sublingually, under your tongue.

How to Properly Consume Tinctures

Edibles can take a long time to take effect because they have to pass through the body to be absorbed, but tinctures are absorbed directly into the bloodstream, which means the effects are immediate. As we already said, all you have to do to take a tincture is to place it under your tongue and wait a few seconds for the effects to be felt.

Different Kinds of Tinctures

There are two main kinds of tinctures:

  • Industrial Hemp Tinctures: These are also called CBD tinctures because they’re made with cannabidiol (CBD). These tinctures are low in THC, so likely won’t give you the “high” feeling.
  • THC Tinctures: THC tinctures will get you high, as they have higher THC levels than their CBD counterparts. The percentage of THC is usually over 0.3% for THC tinctures.
